Protection of large carnivores

Threats

Poaching constitutes a serious problem in Slovakia, even though controlled wolf hunting is allowed there.

According to official data, between 2003 and 2012, 133 individuals on average were killed each year which constituted 22-44% of the population. This impacted wolf dispersion in peripheral areas and into neighboring countries. The peripheral population is also impacted by traffic, the stark example of which is the young she wolf run down by a car in 2012 in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. It was the only thoroughly documented wolf killed in the Czech Republic (Hulva et al., 2012).
