Linear barriers – breaking natural migration routs
Maintaining ecological stability of this part of the Carpathians depends on preserving landscape connectivity and undisturbed migration of individuals.
Most of the ski resorts operate throughout the year creating a physical and behavioral barrier for animals within their home ranges and during migration. What threatens maintaining habitat’s coherence in particular is locating ski resorts within corridors’ bottlenecks between compact bear refuges. A stark example of such practice is the plan to build a ski resort on the Lubań Mountain which would break landscape connectivity between the Eastern Carpathians and the isolated refuges in the Western Carpathians.
